Nestled in an agricultural valley in Eastern Washington, Prosser is a charming small town brimming with activities for wine lovers and families alike. Chukar's flagship store and headquarters are based in Prosser, where founder Pam Montgomery started the company in the 1980s. Nearly our entire team works on-site in Prosser and many of us had the pleasure of growing up here. Enjoy this list of our favorite spots!
1. Go Wine Tasting at Local Wineries and Red Mountain AVA: Here in the heart of Washington wine country, outstanding wines can be found in every direction. In Prosser, there are over 30 wineries, including Coyote Canyon, Airfield Estates, Tirriddis, and more. Just outside of town is Red Mountain AVA which offers one of the most densely clustered collections of tasting rooms in Washington State.
2. Dine at Wine O'Clock: This locally favorite restaurant and wine bar features small-lot wines from their own three labels. The food is garden-fresh and expertly prepared. Outside dining is available. We bring all of our out-of-town guests here! Visit Wine O'Clock for more info.
3. Browse the Farmers Market: From June through October, browse fresh produce grown right here in the heart of cherry, pear, and apple farmlands. Shop local goods and fresh flowers, too, every Saturday at this lively market near the City Park.
4. Enjoy Yellow Rose Nursery: Shop a wide variety of flowers and local plants in this beloved local nursery. Explore several themed display gardens including Mediterranean, Oriental, Xero Scape, West Coast, Alpine and a Children’s Garden. Find pollinator-friendly plants like those planted at our flagship store and learn more at Yellow Rose site.
5. Kayak in the Yakima River: Launch your boat at Crawford Park Riverfront Boat Launch. This section of the Yakima River is slow moving and meanders through farmland. Spot pelicans on the river and enjoy the lush riverside foliage and views of the nearby Horse Heaven Hills. Locals often fish here.
6. Take a Bike Tour: Locally owned and operated Kickstand Tours offers a guided tour on flat terrain that parallels the Yakima River and winds through Prosser. Enjoy scenic vistas and lightly traveled roads while learning about the area and its famous wineries.
7. Enjoy Our Park, Pool, & Library: The Prosser Aquatic Center has two pools, bathhouses, showers, a concession stand, and a dramatic 27-foot long drop slide. Our City Park is recently renovated with a brand new playground and is right across the street from our renovated Prosser Library.
8. Hike in Sacajawea Historical Park: Just a 45 minute drive away, follow the Yakima River from Prosser south to where it converges with the Columbia River just south of Kennewick. Explore the serene landscapes Lewis and Clark once explored. Complete with 1.2 miles of trails and a 0.5 mile ADA-accessible trail, this state park also features outdoor, self-guided interpretive displays and framework representations of Native American dwellings.
9. Stroll through historic downtown Prosser: Prosser was long home to the Native Americans who lived and fished along the Yakima River. In the late 1800s, Prosser enjoyed early investment with the railroad, flour mills, and irrigation districts. In the early 1900s, Prosser was selected as the Benton County seat, which is reflected its stately courthouse and public library. Enjoy our Historic downtown corridor with brick buildings, murals, and antique shops. Stop in for a show at the restored Princess Theatre. Quench your thirst with a brewsky and burger at the legendary Berns Tavern.
10. Chukar Cherries: No trip to Prosser would be complete without a stop at our flagship store. We offer samples of nearly all of our products, host special events, and offer special promotions. The store is conveniently located on Wine Country Road. Visit chukar.com for more info.
