You might notice that three of our products have a new look them, and that's because they are being shipped in Biotre Bags. This is an exciting change for us at Chukar because we are passionate about moving our entire product line into earth-friendly packaging!
BIOTRE 1.0 bags are made of 60% renewable plants; 60% of the bags breaks down into healthy compost in a home composting system. Its outer layers break down naturally in a relatively short period of time; the inner layer can be removed from compost if found and disposed of with normal trash. 60% less material goes to the landfill. By using renewable plants instead of plastic, this packaging reduces the amount of plastic waste that ends up in a landfill.
As you have surely noticed at the grocery store, the majority of shelf-stable food being sold is packaged in plastic bags and, while plastic is suitable for keeping food fresh, it does not break down in landfills nor can it be recycled. We, like most people, find this to be a frustrating reality of the packaged food industry in the US.
That's why Biotre is such a great innovation. Their goal is simple: to provide the industry with packaging that protects both product and the planet. Their bags keep food just as fresh as plastic, yet are designed to partially compost.
Why are we only using Biotre for three products? We are testing the bags out and gauging our customers' reaction before redesigning our entire product line. As you can see below. Our Cherry Pecan Caramel Corn looks quite different now.

Another reason we are testing with only a few products is because Biotre costs three times as much as plastic bags and we need to find a way to absorb that cost without passing it on to the customer. However, we are dedicated to pursuing sustainable packaging, even at our own cost, because we want companies like Biotre to succeed. And if more companies like Chukar buy into their products, their prices will come down naturally.
You can try the new bags out for yourself by purchasing our Grain Free Cherry Granola, Almond Cherry Granola, and Cherry Pecan Caramel Popcorn. Thanks for reading and thanks for your support!
